Gavin and Jez Chase Chocolate with National Geographic

Cacao Farmer in Ecuador

Collaboration is at the heart of our working model, with relationships being a key part, as Founder Gavin Wren and collaborator Jez Fredenburgh discovered whilst working together in South America on a high profile article for National Geographic Traveller.

Chocolate Culture

Jez pitched National Geographic Traveller with a story about the culture of Cacao and its historic origins. Over a three week period in early 2019, they travelled around Ecuador, tracing the roots of chocolate back to 5,000BC and discovering how new businesses are protecting the genetic heritage of this South American country.

Ecuador is one of the few countries that has a right to food in its constitution, and unusually, it also has a right to nature. Researching the story took Jez and Gavin from cloud forests and nature reserves, to street vendors drinking ‘chocolate con queso’ and five star hotels providing their own take on Ecuador’s national food.
