Dietary Guidelines of the Future
HOW ADVICE ON FOOD CAN SERVE THE NEXT GENERATION
Outline
With human and planetary health jointly becoming hot topics for the future of our planet, Wren&Co founder Gavin Wren developed his thought-leading vision of the future’s dietary guidelines. Engaging people through gentle ‘nudges’ has shown to be a highly effective method for behaviour change, so the principles offered provide gentle cues which all people, at all times, can act upon, whatever their social, cultural or economic position is.
Drawing on mental health, circular economies and the SDGs, whilst stepping away from ‘nutritionism’, these ‘Food Rules’ embrace sustainability in every part of diet from growing food to disposing of it, to support human and planetary health, whilst calling on governments and business to help build a better future.
Gavin’s ‘Food Rules’ are explained in more depth in his Medium article.
Based upon extensive knowledge of social scientific literature about human interactions with food, critical analysis was the foundation of this work. Nudging audiences through gentle copy writing increases the chances of it being an effective policy device. Bright, clear and simple graphic design engages audiences.

The Food Rules were incredibly well received internationally across social media as an educational tool, picked up by Sorted Food as a focus for one of their podcasts, with Gavin featuring as their first guest speaker. Also submitted to the call for evidence within the National Food Strategy, these concepts are vital as government looks to digital culture and data for next generation solutions to nutrition policy questions.
